The color restore feature in particular did an excellent job of bringing faded photos back to life in my tests. In addition to letting you adjust resolution, contrast, brightness, and the like, the driver offers some digital enhancement features, including dust removal and backlight correction, that make it easy to improve the scan. The driver offers both an Advanced mode that gives you lots of control but might be a little overwhelming for less knowledgeable users, and a Basic mode with fewer choices. If you want to try your hand at improving it, however, you can adjust settings in the Twain driver. The AutoScan feature did a good enough job in our tests so that many people will find the quality more than acceptable. In addition, Twain and WIA drivers will let you scan from most Windows software that includes a scan command. AutoScan analyzes the image and automatically picks which predefined settings to use, although you can change settings to modify how it works. The buttons let you copy, email, scan to PDF, or run the AutoScan feature. Scanning with the LiDE 110 is easy, with Canon giving you the choice of using its scan utility or one of four buttons on the front panel. The OCR module lets you scan and translate the image of scanned text into a searchable PDF file or an editable text file in a single step. It doesn't come with much software, but the included MP Navigator EX scan utility offers limited photo enhancement and photo album features along with built-in optical character recognition (OCR). The LiDE 110 offers most of the same features as the LiDE 100, including 2400 pixel per inch (ppi) optical resolution and reasonably high scan quality. It's also an easy pick for Editors' Choice.
As I pointed out when I reviewed the Canon CanoScan LiDE 100 ($59.99, 4 stars) that the LiDE 110 replaces in Canon's line, this can make the scanner an all but irresistible bargain. Leaving the film scan feature out translates to a lower price. If the only photos you want to scan are prints, that can be a problem, because adding the ability to scan film adds cost as well.įortunately, it works the other way too. It's hard to find another flatbed photo scanner today that doesn't include film scanning. The Canon CanoScan LiDE110 Color Image Scanner ($59.99 direct) stands out from the crowd for one simple reason. Extremely limited features in bundled software.
